MTG Marvel Reprints Infinite Combat Commander and $55 Angel

Share

While we’ve seen almost everything from the main set, MTG Marvel Super Heroes’ spoiler season isn’t quite over yet. In addition to the set’s Commander precons being revealed this week, some incredible reprints have also surfaced. Appearing in the Marvel Super Heroes bonus sheet, popular Commanders and expensive Angels make for some fantastic booster pack hits.

Aurelia, the Warleader

While this creature has a bit of a hefty mana cost, Aurelia, the Warleader packs a big punch when combined with a wide board. What puts this Angel over the top, however, is its combo potential. Alongside Helm of the Host, for example, you can easily generate an infinite number of combat phases and infinite token copies of Aurelia.

While this makes Aurelia a popular Commander, she’s even more common in the 99. Appearing in over 150,000 other archetypes according to EDHREC, Aurelia is popular in everything from Combat Damage Matters to Experience Counter decks. Thanks to this, despite being reprinted in MTG Foundations, Aurelia still carries a near-$7 price tag.

Archangel of Thune

In a Commander setting, Archangel of Thune gets a lot of its power as a combo piece. In conjunction with the almighty Spike Feeder, for example, Archangel of Thune’s triggered ability enables you to gain infinite life and grow your squad infinitely large. Outside of its combo potential, this Angel still fits nicely into Karlov of the Ghost Council shells and other lifegain decks.

Even with its popularity in mind, however, it’s a bit surprising that this card still has a reprint value of over $55. After all, it’s appeared in multiple Masters sets since its original Magic 2014 printing and doesn’t see much play outside of Commander. It’s unclear as of now if this bonus sheet printing will actually help bring the price down, but we can only hope.

Sword of Fire and Ice

Originally printed in Darksteel, Sword of Fire and Ice is one of the most iconic pieces of equipment ever. For quite some time, this card was a popular tutor target for Stoneforge Mystic decks in Constructed. Unfortunately, Sword’s Constructed applications have significantly fallen off in recent years, but it still sees lots of Commander play.

Any equipment-themed decks, including those centered around Captain America, First Avenger, make for elite homes for this Sword. Additionally, Sword of Fire and Ice’s triggered ability pairs perfectly with Double Strike creatures and trigger doublers like Cloud, Midgar Mercenary. Ultimately, these applications have helped keep this equipment at a $42 price point in its cheapest form despite multiple reprints.

Righteous Fury

From a power level standpoint, Righteous Fury isn’t anything special. While it can function as a Plague Wind effect with some setup, cheaper cards, like Split Up, can do the same thing but better. That being said, Righteous Fury was well-deserving of a reprint due to its scarcity. With printings only in Portal Second Age and Starter 1999 products, this mediocre sorcery is still worth over $11.

Narset’s Reversal

While it reads a bit funky, Narset’s Reversal is a fantastic Commander card that’s a worthy addition to tons of different decks. Getting around uncounterable effects, you can either copy your own cards or your opponent’s, providing tons of versatility. This can open up some gnarly combos with Isochron Scepter, allowing you to repeatedly copy extra turn spells.

Despite seeing play in 166,000 Commander decks according to EDHREC, though, this instant isn’t worth much. This is due to a recent reprint in the Jeskai Striker precon, which has tanked Narset’s Reversal’s price to $3.

Path to Exile

Giving your opponent a land is never ideal, but removing any creature for just one mana is too efficient. Thanks to this, it’s no wonder Path to Exile has nearly crossed the 2,000,000 deck threshold according to EDHREC.

From a reprint value perspective, though, this instant isn’t amazing. According to Scryfall, this card now has 53 different variants available, making its $1 valuation make sense. Despite this, thanks to being a Commander super staple, Path to Exile is still a decent card to find in any MTG pack, as you can easily make a home for it.
